ABOUT

Drum Lessons That Build Skill, Confidence, and Joy

II’m Jeffrey Mince — a San Francisco–based professional drummer, music educator, former Buddhist monk, and certified Positive Psychology & Mindfulness Coach.

I teach in person at my San Francisco studio and internationally online. With over 30 years of meditation and mindfulness practice, I bring a rare blend of high-level musical training and whole-person coaching to every lesson.

This isn’t just “learn a few beats.” It’s a supportive, structured way to develop real drumming skill — and the focus, confidence, and creative courage that come with it.

What Makes These Lessons Different

Musical excellence, taught with clarity.

I’ve toured internationally and recorded across styles—Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock, Punk, Country, Blues, Funk, and more. I’m especially passionate about rhythm traditions like Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Afro Pop, Reggae, and Ska, and I’ve studied global approaches to groove and time for years.

A calm, encouraging learning environment.
My background in mindfulness helps students learn faster—because we’re also training attention, patience, and emotional regulation. That matters when you’re working through difficult coordination, building speed, or pushing past frustration.

Personalized lessons that meet you where you are.
Beginners, returning players, and experienced drummers all benefit from a lesson plan that fits their goals, learning style, and schedule. We’ll keep it practical, musical, and motivating.

What You’ll Learn

Depending on your goals, lessons can include:

  • Timing + groove (the skills that make drumming feel great)

  • Hand technique for control, speed, and endurance

  • Coordination + independence (without overwhelm)

  • Fills, transitions, and dynamics that make your playing musical

  • Reading basics (optional, but powerful)

  • Style development in rock, funk, jazz, Latin, reggae, and more

  • Practice strategies so you make progress between sessions

Who This Is For

These lessons are a strong fit if you want:

  • A teacher who is highly experienced and results-focused

  • A learning experience that’s supportive and challenging in the right way

  • A clear path from “I’m stuck” to confident, musical playing

  • Not just chops—a groove that feels good and works with real music

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching is genuinely my passion. I love helping students move through the hard parts—because that’s where confidence is built. When someone starts to trust their hands, their time, and their ability to learn, something opens up. Drumming becomes more than technique: it becomes expression, creativity, and empowerment.

I believe mastering an instrument can strengthen every part of life—focus, resilience, communication, and self-belief—and I’m committed to supporting students as whole people.

A Note on My Coaching Work

Alongside teaching, I work as a certified Positive Psychology and mindfulness coach, and I’m building the Punk Monk / Living Rhythm Program— rhythm-based mentorship and workshops that use drumming as a path to presence, confidence, and growth. While drum lessons aren’t coaching sessions, that background informs how I teach: with clarity, compassion, and a strong foundation in what helps people grow.
